Kit Kittredge is a clever, resourceful girl growing up in Cincinnati in 1934. Many people are losing their jobs, their money, and even their homes. When Kit's dad loses his job, her world gets turned upside down. Kit learns what "waste not, want not" really means, gets into very big trouble, and meets people whose lives are far worse than her own. Kit's strong spirit - and her nose for news - help her hold on to hope even when the future looks bleak from every angle.

Kit was added to the collection of American Girls in 2000, the same year that Felicity and her items began to be phased out. Kit was the fourth girl added after the collection was launched in 1986 with Kirsten, Samantha and Molly.

Retired

In July 2004, all of the Historical Doll "Stories & Outfits Collections with Caddy" were retired, including Kit's.

In February 2006, all of the historical girl short story books were retired including both of Kit's short stories. Then, at the end of April 2006, Kit's delightful Waffle Iron set became sold out. The Waffle Iron set was the first item to be truly retired from Kit's Collection, because Kit's Short Stories are being re-released as a single volume in August 2006.

In 2007, several of Kit's items were retired including Cincinnati Reds Fan Outfit, Tree House Outfit, Hobo Camp Supplies, Kit's Railway Adventure book, Kit's Friendship Fun, Kit's Mystery Party Game, Stationery Set, Short Story Collection and her posters. This marked the first retirements of any of Kit's outfits. December 2007 saw the retirement of Kit's cute swimming outfit.
